Welcome to St. Thomas's Parish!

Though the comforts of a church building are important, it is the people coming together within its walls who define the parish. St. Thomas affords all hearts & minds a safe and loving home in which all may explore their relationship with God and this beautiful world.

Weekly Rumination PDF Print
Written by Karen Krauss
Thursday, 04 March 2010
Greetings Parish Family,

When Fr. Paul asked the members of the vestry to send a weekly rumination to the parish during Lent, I took him rather literally.  This is because whenever I see his weekly rumination email in my mailbox, I always think of the Sufi mystic, Rumi, whose words offer timeless inspiration.

For me, the season of Lent is time of self-examination and self-awareness. As a teen and young adult, I would regularly give up all things chocolate for Lent only to gorge on it again when Easter arrived. No lesson learned. Well, maybe a small lesson about self-control being a good thing but something I'd never be secure enough to practice on my own or for any length of time.

Eventually, I began to understand that Lent was a time to explore my Christian faith and what my vows and promises really stood for deep down not just superficially. This exploration has brought me to some interesting places both literally and figuratively. Over the years, Jesus's teachings have lead me to Rumi. There are two of his quotes that I wish to share with you during this Lenten season:

"Don't grieve. Anything you lose comes round in another form."

Even though I now hold a masters' in school counseling, I've known for quite some time that humans do grieve after a loss and that while there are stages to the grieving process, each of us experiences grief in a different way.  Rumi tidies up a lot of "stuff" for me with that first quote and I am grateful to have that wisdom now. I am also grateful that Jesus has walked every step with me during times of loss and bounty. Both of these wise men ease the sharp sting of loss and awaken the joy of rebirth.

Rumi also said, "Look inside your question for the answer."

This second quote is also golden for me as it shines a laser light on the problem and the solution(s?) when one is courageous enough to follow that light. Or to follow Jesus's light.  During this Lent allow yourself  be courageous; to walk with Jesus, to ask the questions, to be enlighten with the answers. Even if you're terrified follow Jesus's lead.  He is courageous and loving always. And you never know where He might lead you.

Peace,
Karen Krauss
